Many people who have interest
in Missouri Foxtrotters or indeed are fortunate enough
to be the owner of one of these wonderful horses,
were not fortunate enough to grow up with the breed.
Missouri Foxtrotters are now to be found globally
and yet to most people the names on a pedigree are
simply hollow names.
In our own small way we
are attempting to bring to life some of the ancestors
of today's horses so those interested can see the
sorts of horse that created this breed.
The original Foxtrotters
of the Ozarks were primarily Saddlehorses stemming
from a strong Morgan and Thoroughbred background.
The gaiting heritage of these horses came largely
from the Naragansett Pacers developed in Rhode Island
in the 1600's. Narragansett's became extinct by 1800
however so the original Saddlehorses carrying their
blood came by it in a diluted fashion. A very large
contribution to the gait was brought in with the Canadian
Pacer blood which can be found in all American gaited
breeds to some degree. The Canadian Pacer got it's
gait from the Narragansett.
For more information on
the foundation of this breed and how it has evolved
into the 21st Century, please feel free to visit the
"Articles" page for more information.
The pictures on this page
will sometimes be fuzzy and out of focus due to the
fact they were gleaned from very old, poorly printed
books and photos that are more than several decades
old. We have done the best we can to clarify these
pictures and as technology grows may in time be able
to replace them with better examples.
It is important when viewing
this page to realize most of these photos stem from
the old Celebration books which depict primarily the
show horses. It would be easy to get a misunderstanding
about the foundation of the breed if one were only
to see these pictures because a large majority of
the stallions here were either Tennessee Walkers or
more than half TWH.
This illustrates just how
much the original foundation was diluted between 1970
and 1983 when the books closed. During that time frame
nearly every stallion brought into the breed was TWH...a
direct opposite from the original foundation.
All the same, the names
of all these stallions show up on today's MFT pedigrees
even though few of them actually impacted the breed
in a significant way.
The pictures are listed
according to alphabet, but are not strictly alphabetized.
We just wished to make it somewhat easier to locate
specific horses by grouping them according to the
letter their name begins with.
We hope you will enjoy
this page and come back to visit often!
If anyone has photos of
old horses that would like to share them, please feel
free to email them to me and they will be placed on
this page for all to enjoy!
